INNOVATIVE E-SERVICES FOR BOOSTING TOURIST ECONOMY
AND MULTIMODAL PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

ABOUT

The INVESTMENT project aims at delivering an e-platform supporting an ecosystem of innovative services, addressing the requirements of citizens, tourists and public transportation service providers through consolidating data across all the involved means of transport and offering a unified view of the -otherwise- fragmented transportation network between the region of Western Greece and Puglia (Bari, Taranto, Ostuni).

The e-platform will support three core e-services: (a) a multimodal public transit route planner, computing and visualizing optimal end-to-end routes (from any point A to any point B, e.g., from Taranto to Olympia) using different modes of transportation (e.g., bus→train→ferry→urban bus→walking); (b) a multimodal tourist tour planner, which will derive personalized daily tourist tours via selected attractions (each tour comprising an ordered set of attractions, using public transport services to move from a location to another); (c) a decision support system (DSS) identifying bottlenecks across the public transport network to assist public transport operators, planners and policy makers in performing selective improvements upon the network (e.g. timetable updates or establishment of new services/routes).

PROJECT

  • Project Objectives
  • Expected Results & Target Groups
  • Project Impact

The INVESTMENT project aims at delivering an e-platform hosting an ecosystem of innovative and environmentally-friendly services which address the needs of passengers (citizens and tourists) of transportation networks spanning the regions of Western Greece and Puglia (Bari, Taranto, Ostuni). Both regions are at the main transportation corridor connecting Western Europe with Greece and the Balkans, and constitute the main gateway for tourists traveling through land/maritime transportation to visit Puglia, the Ionian islands, and the Greek mainland (via the port of Patras). Both the Italian and Greek areas feature emblematic tourist attractions (e.g. Ostuni, Olympia), yet, those are difficult to reach through public transport especially when considering multimodal journeys or tourist trips.

INVESTMENT aims at offering an integrated and consistent view of the fragmented public transportation services and also supporting the cross border cooperation between the regions of Western Greece and Puglia through the development of smart ICT solutions which will:

(a) Improve the attractiveness and ridership of public transport systems thus enhancing growth, prosperity and sustainability, while also leveraging the exploitation of the huge tourist, cultural and environmental reserve of the area.

(b) Offer a consistent view of the public transport network to involved stakeholders, thereby enabling the implementation of localized corrective actions in order to eliminate bottlenecks and improve transport efficiency.

INVESTMENT proposes a core data platform as a unique point of reference for public transport stakeholders, in order to consolidate and homogenize – the so far heterogeneous – public transportation data. The platform will adopt a multi-tier architecture wherein the data tier will store suitably formatted transportation data (e.g., locations of public transit stops, timetables of public transit services, etc) and the logic tier will comprise the business logic of the e-services. The platform will:

  • offer transport operators the required means for uploading, validating and updating timetable data;
  • consolidate the uploaded transportation data across all the involved means of transport (e.g., urban/suburban bus services, trains, ships, etc) offering a unified view of the -otherwise fragmented- transportation network.

INVESTMENT will deliver an e-platform accessed by transport-relevant stakeholders (i.e. transport companies, agencies, public administration authorities) so as to upload, update and validate transport network data (e.g., locations of public transport stops, timetables of transport services), which will be then automatically converted to a standard machine-processable format. The platform will provide user-friendly interfaces for feeding data relevant to tourist sites and points of interest (POIs), such as geo-coordinates, descriptions, opening hours, etc.

Based on the e-platform, INVESTMENT will implement 3 core e-services:

  • A Multimodal Public Transit Trip Planner (web & mobile app) that will compute and visualize optimal end-to-end routes (from any point A to any point B) using different modes of transportation (e.g., bus, train, ferry, walking).
  • A Multimodal Tourist Tour Planner (web & mobile app) that will derive feasible trip plans for tourists to visit the most interesting attractions within their available time span. The service will time-sequence POIs matching user preferences, accessibility requirements, considering public transport options for moving among POIs.
  • A Decision support system (DSS, offered as web app) that will identify bottlenecks or insufficiently covered areas across the public transport network. DSS will assist public transportation operators, planners and policy makers in performing selective improvements across the transport network.

The INVESTMENT approach goes far beyond the existing practice in the regions of Western Greece and Puglia:

  • The e-platform homogenizes the so far incompatible transport network data so as to support added-value transport-related services.
  • It delivers two innovative services (Multimodal Public Transit Trip Planner and Multimodal Tourist Tour Planner) addressed to travelers (citizens and tourists), currently not in offer.
  • It also delivers a DSS tool, which allows transport network planners to examine the existing transport network characteristics, identify problems and plan network fine-tuning where needed (to our knowledge, no analogous tool exists in the participating countries).

The main target groups of INVESTMENT project are:

  • Citizens/visitors of the programme area traveling through means of public transportation (end-users of the Multimodal Public Transit Trip Planner and the Multimodal Tourist Tour Planner web/mobile applications),
  • Key stakeholders of the public transport domain, i.e., transportation service providers, public transport associations, agencies and planning organizations (end-users of the DSS).
  • Other beneficiaries including regional and local administration authorities as well as tourist businesses, which will benefit from INVESTMENT results through the improvements achieved in the accessibility and efficiency (hence, the attractiveness) of the public transport systems, thus motivating the transition of large groups of travelers from private to public means of mobility, fostering the sustainable tourist development and reducing the environmental footprint related to mobility.

INVESTMENT is foreseen to generate direct and immediate impact to a multitude of stakeholders. Residents will enjoy improved public transit services with less bottlenecks and minimal waiting time when traveling within the program area. The multimodal route planning application will provide reliable info about transit services; through the augmented reality mode users will receive useful information about nearby stops (e.g. bus stops, ports, etc), which is typically yield via expensive smart stop displays (e.g. which transit services pass by those stops and when they are expected to arrive). Tourists using the multimodal tourist tour planner will receive personalized recommendations (separate tourist itinerary for each day spent at the destination) for visiting the most important attractions that better match their preferences. The tours will be optimized according to the specified start/end location, the preferred modes of transport, the opening hours of POIs, the time available for sightseeing, etc, while also minimizing the waiting time for multimodal trips. Transportation providers will develop a collaboration culture and adjust their services so as to improve their efficiency and interconnectivity at regional and cross-regional level. Thus, they are expected to increase their ridership and turnover while also promoting their corporate image. The participating public administration authorities will benefit from the know-how transfer from technical partners (through workshops and training). Moreover, the DSS tool delivered, will enhance their collaboration with public transportation operators, planners and policy makers so as to fine-tune the transit network (e.g., timetable updates or establishment of new services/routes) within their territory and motivate attitude shift towards public transportation for both citizens and tourists of the programme area. Finally, INVESTMENT will improve the reachability and effectively promote their tourist, environmental and cultural assets.
